About this Project

Pine Hall is a modern and energy efficient residence hall that will replace four outdated and over-populated halls from 1976. The University of Massachusetts campus experience will significantly improve for 1,210 first-year students. “We know from studies and our own extensive experience that providing high-quality living-learning environments for students increases graduation rates, retention rates and academic performance,” said UMass President Marty Meehan

The $134 million housing and dining complex is 267,500 SF and 5 stories with a 38,000 SF student dining commons with a capacity of 800. Wherever you go, light pours in through INTUS Arcade double pane casement windows and storefronts. The new building will have two faculty-in-residence apartments, classrooms, multimedia and study lounges, wireless internet, two large lounges with demonstration kitchens, multimedia equipment and recreation space, according to a news release. The north portion will have “maker spaces” to encourage collaborative work, while the south section will have music practice rooms and two computer learning commons.

“The housing portion of the project will be built under a public-private partnership between UMass Dartmouth and EdR, one of the largest and most experienced collegiate housing developers and managers in the country. The partnership will allow the building of new housing without any state taxpayer funds and does not add to the debt burden for the university. Instead, EdR will finance the project through the student rent similar to the housing fees being paid for current UMass Dartmouth housing.  The EdR team includes the design firm of Dimella Shaffer Architects and construction management firm of Suffolk Construction.” – UMass
