MCN Build was retained to provide preconstruction and general contracting services for the three-phase modernization and expansion of Benning Elementary School, totaling 137,000SF. MCN added 45,000SF of new construction comprising of classrooms and assembly spaces above the school’s existing parking lot in order to maintain onsite parking counts while avoiding the added cost of structured parking. Site redevelopment included new stormwater management measures and incoming utilities. 

 

In order to accommodate DC PREP’s programmatic mandate for a gym and a cafeteria at each of the elementary and middle schools without negatively impacting space available for outdoor play; MCN added a full court and a half court gym over the existing multipurpose room. This surgical structural intervention included cutting large sections of post tensioned concrete slabs and building a new structure within the existing shell abutting a fully operational school building. 

 

The renovation of the existing building was performed during the 8 weeks of summer break and included brand new MEP systems, creating new window openings in the existing (windowless) 70,000 SF building, reprogramming the classroom spaces, installing a 1,000 SF glass floor panel (laylight) on the second floor and installing a lightwell adjacent to the Pre-K spaces to facilitate the entrance of natural light into those below grade classrooms.
